Album Cover Ideas

Paul
Ideas

A photo of the band using the cut-out effect: Would probably look better if manually edited in this style - cartoony, bright colours, easy to add other unrealistic aspects (rainbow, sun etc.)

All band members in a silhouette, playing on the black and white theme of their clothes, the lines highlight their faces, the title of the band/album could be in a red stylised font over the picture.

An idea which plays with colour, reflecting the black and white motif which is recurrent in our band's image, as well as the album title. Colour is used widely throughout our music video also, and the cut-out effect used on the background makes the band members stand out as if superimposed onto the picture.

Another variation on the colour theme with a different pattern and font.

Less focus on colour, a more simple design. The character on the front would not have to be someone from the video, with the idea playing more on the band name (as in the shocking discovery of a super phenomenon).

Inspiration

Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
A colourful, cartoony and simple cover, with obvious contrast between the black and white background and various objects at the centre. The band name and album name is not the central focus, being placed in the top left corner.

Just thought I'd make a post for us all to put ideas/inspiration for possible album covers.

Feedback from Test Screening

We burned a version of our project that we were happy with to DVD, then played it to some other media students in order to get feedback on the good points, and also on what we could improve.

Good points

The colourised shots are aesthetically pleasing
The 'craziness' makes it fun to watch
It cuts well to the beat, creating a good pace and rhythm
The judges shots are consistent and well-placed

Constructive Criticisms

Problem: Need more judges shots at the end
Solution: We decided that as some people liked the placing of the judges shots, we would leave this.

Problem: The Music Channel syle title is on screen for too long
Solution: We shortened the time it was on screen by reducing the number of shots it's over by one

Problem: Ending comes too quickly
Solution: We slowed down the music slightly, allowing the final shot to be on screen for about 1 second longer

Problem: Flashes at end a bit out of time
Solution: We watched it through at half speed and made the flashes fit better with the drum beats

Problem: 1, 2, 3, 4 sequence is hard to see as the colours are too overpowering
Solution: We increased saturation and contrast and made the colours less strong

Problem: The 2 and the 3 in the 1,2,3,4 sequence are too similar
Solution: We changed the order so that green and yellow were not next to each other

Editing suggestions

Judges -> Colour replace so that everything in the foreground has its original colour but everything in the background is greyscale. Looks better than desaturating the whole shot
Running-> Posterised?
Posterise-> Better when you can't tell it's there
Colour-> Good in the later shots

Record Company Ideas

Record Company:
- LondonParis productions (LP Productions)

Prototype of a Logo

Ideas:
- Use of red white and blue, because it appears on both the French and the British flags.
- LondonParis - French and English, same as the singing in the song
- Abbreviated to LP, which is also another name for a record

Target Audience

Primary Audience:
Both genders, ages (10-40): The song is light-hearted and fun, with a strong beat, so it would appeal to people of a wide age range, without limiting itself to any particular level of society. It's easily accessible and everyone who listens to it can take something from it for their own enjoyment.

Secondary Audience:
Expanding the audience further: Children and adults beyond the approximate age ranges mentioned. As this song is so quirky it is likely that people of all ages will enjoy it, but these age ranges are not as likely to go out and purchase the album/watch the music video.

Tastes and Attitudes:
Alternative: The song does not confine itself to any particular music genre, (pop, indie, rock, r'n'b), allowing people with widely varying music taste to like it. I would say that the more extreme the music taste, the less likely they are to listen to something outside of their comfort zone, ie. heavy metal or avid r'n'b/rap fans. It is at it's core a light-hearted song, so people of a generally more positive disposition are more likely to enjoy it then others.

Other media they may consume:
A wide range of music: Alternative, pop, indie, rock, r'n'b, garage, dance
Internet: YouTube, Myspace, Facebook, alternative music sites
Television: Music channels, comedy

What function does this kind of music serve:
To be enjoyed by a wide range of people, to make them feel good, to cheer people up.

Critical Re-shoot List

Track towards judges coughing - as its not very smooth

Ezzine eye pan - shaky

The shots of characters switching instruments- slightly tilt from on and anouther, doesnt smoothly cut

More Character shots during the slow motion part - not quite enough footage.

Reflections from Sunday Shoot

We were very efficient, and finished quickly.
We did all our new shots and reshoots.

Reflections from Thursday's Shoot

Generally went well.
We were slightly disorganised; not clear what shots needed done, and excactly when and which actors were coming.
We got all the footage we needed.
The weather was a slight problem, the wind caused props to blow away, and due to it being cloudy some of our shots were dark.

Reflection from Saturdays shoot

Slight mix up with actors due to unclear communications, althrough enough turned up.
Judges shots went well
We got a large amount of character footage.

New Shots

1. More ECU's, for example, of:
- the microphone
- lips singing

2. CU, ECU, MS
- Sezan singing;
"On sait tous où finissent tes refrains
Dis moi où, dis moi où ?
Dans la bouche des crétins."

3. CU, ECU
- Paul;
"I said!"

4. CU on female singers hip moving

5. CU arch round female singer

6. 'chick''chick' bit - Tutu A hits Tutu Fairy b. MCU/CU

7. Long shots from differnt angles on all the action

Written by Zoe

Reshoot List

1. MS of female singer walking towards microphone
Problem: Wrong angle, different to shot after = lack of continuity
Solution: Use of lower angle to show more of sky and make it the same as the shot of the male singer walking towards the microphone

2. MCU male singer singing "I play the bass"
Problem: Shot autoexposes as the singers head moves, changing the light throughout
Solution: Have the singer stay in the same place throughout the shot

3. Character A pushing singers heads apart
Problem: Singers aren't singing the right line before she pushes their heads apart
Solution: Singers to sing "I play the rhodes" instead of "I play the piano"

4. Female singer singing "Who's gonna sing?" on the phone
Problem: Too dark, strange angle, not looking at camera
Solution: Take straight on in a lighter area

5. Female singer shouting angrily on the phone.
Problem: Bad angle, needs to be tightly framed. Too dark.
Solution: reframe, check lightining

6. Female singing "who's gonna sing" to the male singer
Problem: female actor smiles at end, odd framing
Solution: tighter framing

Weird scenes

Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent

I was thinking about the inclusion of the fighting between characters suggested by Jasmine, pushing people out of the way and stuff and thought that the video above was a good example of out of the ordinary characters having a fight.

The video also uses slow-mo and lip-synching at certain points, as well as fast cuts and short shots. This is coupled with quite a lot of action for what's actually a slow, steady song. So I just thought I'd put it up as something we could take inspiration from. Plus, those are some wicked clowns.

Found something

I've found some mp3 editing software (Wavepad) and am going to experiment with the song a bit over the weekend and see what I come up with. I'll post the results later on.

Paul's Response

Hey Jas and Zoe,
just want to apologise for not being there for the last week of school but I was so rough I wouldn't have so much as been contributing as falling asleep on your shoulders/the keyboard/everything.

Regarding the track choice - I'm fine with that song (and would've been fine with any of them) so that's all good

Regarding the idea - I'm having trouble seeing why we did all the brainstorming and planning as a group only to decide on an idea thought up by both of you way way way before we even really started the project. I don't particularly like the idea as a whole, though certain aspects I do like.

These aspects are the ones we discussed as a group, such as a possible picnic scene, but the fact that the entirity of the idea has reverted to your initial plan, which I had no part in, makes the whole planning and discussion process completely redundant, with the only contribution of mine to the idea being the girl in the wedding dress, which is taken completely out of context can I add ;)

I just wanted to let you know where I stand and why. What I want out of this project is a music video which I can not only be proud of but also reference as a piece of work that I had creative and technical input into, and I don't feel that I'd get that with this idea.

Also, just wondering why the group had two meetings in my absence, when the week before I was ill we had none?

I know this is some massive bit of holiday reading for you two, sorry about that :D, but I just wanted to get you feedback now at the first chance I've had so we have time to discuss the project over summer ready for when we get back.

Right, that's everything. Talk to you both soon,
Paul x

These photos show a possible place to hang two sheets from in order to do the paint scene. The downsides are that it is not a particularly secluded area, and behind the fence is a nursery school, although its unlikely we would be shooting in school time anyway.

This photo shows a large field that would be good for filming the picnic scene in, as it looks attractive from most angles, and gives us plenty of room to be creative with our shots.

These 4 photos all show possible pairs of trees that we could hang a sheet from. The downside of the first 2 is that we would need to cover the path, which wouldnt work very well on a busy day, while the disadvantage of the third is that it's on a slope. The fourth pair of trees seems like it would work the best.

This photo shows another aesthetically interesting location that could be used somehow, and would make a nice shot.

The only downside to this park is that it is very public, there is a childrens playground, and the fields are often used for sports. The picture below shows the playground area, and the basketball courts.

This video gives more of an idea of how the park looks overall, giving a 360' view from the bottom field.

Song Lyrics

Lyrics:

1-11, seconds before music starts, strange noises
11-20, just drum beat
20-29, music no lyrics
29+, lyrics begin

29-39, Verse 1
J'aime beaucoup, c'que tu fais
J'aime ton style, j'aime ton jeu
Mais je sais, que tu peux faire mieux
Car chaque jour, chaque nuit
39-58, chorus
I play the bass - tu joues de la basse
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - tu joues du synthé
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - aussi des bongos
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - un peu de banjo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
58-1:17, verse 2
Succès fou dans la cage aux requins
Entre nous pourquoi pas
Même si ça ne sert à rien
On sait tous où finissent tes refrains
Dis moi où, dis moi où ?
Dans la bouche des crétins.
1:17-1:37, chorus
I play the bass - tu joues des congas
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - un peu de sitar
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - de l'harmonica
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - aussi du saxo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
1:37- 1:57, verse 3
Succès fou dans la cage aux requins
Entre nous pourquoi pas
Même si ça ne sert à rien
On sait tous où finissent tes refrains
Dis moi où, dis moi où ?
Dans la bouche des crétins.
1:57- 2:16, change
C'est bien comme ça
Ça chauffe de haut en bas
C'est bien comme ça
Tout le monde connais les pas
C'est bien comme ça
Joue le encore une fois
C'est bien comme ça1,2,3,4 - 2:13-2:16,(1,2,3,4)
2:16-2:35
I play the bass - tu joues de la basse
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - tu joues du synthé
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - aussi des bongos
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - un peu de banjo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?"
2:35-3:20, faint lyrics

Translation:

I like a lot of what you do
I like your style,
I like your game
But I know that you can do better
For every day, every night

I play the bass - you play the low one
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - you play the synth
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - also bongos
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - a little banjo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?

Insane success is in the cage to the sharks
Between us why not
Even if that does not serve anything
One knows where you finish your refrains
I say where, I say where?
In the mouth of the morons.
I play the bass - you play the congas
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - a little sitar
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - harmonica
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - also saxo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
Crazy success is in the cage to the sharks
Between us why not
Even if that does not serve anything
One knows where you finish your refrains
I say where, I say where?
In the mouth of the morons.
This is as well as that
heats from the top down
This is as well as that
Everyone knows the steps
This is as well as that
Play is once more
This is as well as that1,2,3,4
I play the bass - you play the low one
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - you play the synth
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?
I play the bass - also the bongos
I play the piano - who's gonna sing ?
I play the synth - a little banjo
I play the rhodes - who's gonna sing ?

Last 3 Track Choices

Prototypes - Who's gonna sing?

For The Girl - The Fratellis

Country Boys and City Girls - The Fratellis

Poseted by Jasmine

Meeting 3

17/07/07

Present: Zoe, Jasmine

Agenda:
-Final Track Choice
-Further discussion of Final Idea

Final Track agreed on; Who's gonna sing? - Prototypes
Ask miss B for confirmation

Brief synopsis of Final Idea

Beginning:

Lego at beginning, close up, and hands playing with it, bright colour nails, close up of her nails. Mainly wearing black, contrasting with lego and her nails.

For the verses

Real life recreation of what she was creating with the lego, picnic scene. Boy and girl having a picnic, everything looks really normal at first.

Then strange guests arrive, poking their heads from behind of a tree, the two picnic people carry on as normal. The strange guests run around the tree and picnic area, sped up editing.

Magician doing a failed magic act, for example; tries to pull a rabbit out of a hat, it turns out to be a cat.
Clown: Doing typical clown acts; for example squirting water at the picnic couple, but they don’t react.
Tutu woman; blowing bubbles/ confetti

When the chorus comes;

Change from green background, cross zoom, to white background. White sheet back drop and one on the floor, the couple have a paint fight with poster paints.

Ending:

Go back to the lego person fallen asleep.

Targets: scout parks and take photos of possible locations.
Think about possible characters and actors for next meeting

Eliminating Songs: Round One

Where is my mind? - Pixies
Because: Zoe and Jasmine particularly don't like it, and because it received the lowest overall score.

Tell Me - The Moths
Because: No-one particularly liked it, and because it received the second-lowest overall score due to the focus on lyrics.

Dancing in the Moonlight - Toploader
Because: Although we like the song, we believe it already has an institutional image, and people will focus too much on the song rather than on our video

California - The Kooks
Because: The lyrics would have had to be quite a focus, and we believed the conventions of the genre would be too hard to stray from

The Narcissist - The Libertines
Because: Jasmine and Paul preffered the other songs on the Possibles list

Meeting One Notes

Meeting One
Date and Time: Monday 2nd July, 9:30 - 10:50
Members present: All

Focus: Song Discussion/Aims and targets for the brief and overall project

Aims:
- To produce an effective modern music video which fits the criteria of the brief
- For our music video to be unusual, and draw in the target audience

Possible songs:
Song for Clay - Bloc Party (Paul)
Patins - CSS (Zoe)

Song 1: Bloc Party
Pros
- Easy song to fit different styles of video to (ie narrative- or performance-based)
- Good rhythm

Cons
- Lyrics are hard to understand
- Too heavy/rocky - we believe this genre has too many conventions, and so we wouldn't be able to construct an obscure narrative, which was one of our aims

Song 2: CSS
Pros
- Unusual song and different style - allows us to comply with our aim of producing a more unusual and obscure video
- Lack of conventions for genre allows originality and creativity

Cons
- Focus isn't on the lyrics

End Result
We decided that, as one member of the group didn't like the CSS song and another member of the group didn't like the Bloc Party song, we would say no to both for now and try to think of some other possibilities which would appeal more to all members of the group

Other Choices
Space and the Woods - Late of the Pier (Zoe)
Pop the Glock - Uffie (Zoe)
Rebellion Lies - ArcadeFire (Paul)

We then decided to discuss genre, making lists of genres we didn't particularly want to work with, genres that were possible, and genres that we particularly liked.

Dislike:
- Grime (too difficult)
- Rap (too difficult)
- Dance (too difficult)
- Hard Rock (too many existing conventions)
- Country and Western (not modern enough)

Possible:
- Techno
- Drum and Bass
- Reggae

Like:
- Indie
- Nu-rave
- Alternative

Targets for next meeting:
- Each member of the group should compile a list of at least 10 possible song choices on their blog
- Each member of the group should do an ideas brainstorm or a synopsis for one idea on their blog

Discussed by whole group, scribed by Zoe and Paul, typed by Zoe
